EMD Biosciences announces the launch of the ProteoPlex™ 16-Well Human Cytokine Array Kit

EMD Biosciences, Inc., a manufacturer of products for proteomics and disease pathway analysis, announces the launch of the ProteoPlex™16-Well Human Cytokine Array Kit. The kit provides a complete solution for determining the levels of 12 cytokines from 10 sera or tissue culture supernatants simultaneously.

Conventional cytokine measurements are based on single analyte detection requiring multiple kits and large sample volumes to test for multiple cytokines. In contrast, the ProteoPlex arrays require only 50 microliters of the sample material to determine concentrations of 12 different cytokines.

Cytokines are chemical messengers that circulate in the body. A part of the immune system, cytokines affect cell to cell communications and interactions. Certain conditions or diseases are associated with changes in the amount of more than one cytokine in the body. Thus the simultaneous quantitation of a variety of cytokines, is important to gauge the status of a cell system or organism. "For instance, if you knew only that TNFalpha was high you would know that the system was going to an inflammatory state, but you wouldn't know if the T-cells were transitioning to a Th1 or Th2 state, for that you'd need to know a few other analytes (IL1alpha, IL-4, etc.)." said Dr. Samuel LaBrie, R&D group leader for EMD Biosceinces’ Array group.
