Environmental Stewardship and EMD
 |
As a life science company, EMD continually looks for new ways to incorporate green practices into daily operations. In 2008, EMD purchased renewable energy from Madison Gas & Electric (MG&E) equivalent to power 100% of the energy needs of its 35,000-square-foot life science technology facility in Madison, Wis. (home of the Novagen® business unit). This partnership with the Green Power Tomorrow program supports renewable energy produced from wind and MG&E customer-owned solar electric systems.
| | | The Madison EMD site uses more than one million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. The majority of this energy is needed to operate freezers storing perishable biological products. Energy is one of EMD's larger operating expenses, and full participation in Green Power Tomorrow will likely add more than 10% to the company's annual electric costs. | EMD reinforces its dedication to energy conservation and environmental stewardship through other activities, including:
• An internal recycling program.
• Energy-efficient lighting.
• Employee incentives for commuting by bike.
• A commitment to working with "green" vendors.
• Streamlining printed materials to reduce weight and paper use; for example, the 2008/09 Calbiochem® catalog is in an eco-friendly format that resulted in 62 million fewer pages (equiavlent to more than 5,000 trees saved.).
