3b-Hydroxy-20(29)-lupaene-28-oic Acid Colorless solid. Antitumor and anti-HIV agent. A pentacyclic triterpene that selectively inhibits human melanoma in cell culture and in animal models. Appears to act specifically on melanoma cells without affecting other types of tumors. The antitumor effects of betulinic acid appear to be associated with the induction of mitochondrial permeability transition pore that triggers apoptosis. Also acts as a potent inhibitor of Hh/Gli signaling pathway inhibitor (IC50 = 32 µM). Purity: >97% by HPLC. CAS 472-15-1. Ref.: Arai, M.A., et al. 2008. Bioorg. Med. Chem. 18, In press.
