White solid with a faint yellow cast. PROTECT FROM LIGHT. HYGROSCOPIC. Principal alkaloid of ipecac, isolated from the ground roots of Uragoga ipecacuanha. Irreversibly blocks protein synthesis in eukaryotes by inhibiting the movement of ribosomes along the mRNA. Induces hypotension by blocking adrenoreceptors.
