Almost non-fluorescent in the absence of Ca2+, but fluorescence increases 40-fold upon Ca2+ binding. Operates at visible excitation and emission wavelengths. Weaker binding of Ca2+ facilitates measurement of higher peaks of Ca2+ transients than is possible with FURA 2. FLUO 3 is rapidly inactivated by hydroxyl radicals.
