White to off-white powder. HYGROSCOPIC. Broad-spectrum cell culture antibiotic that is nontoxic to viruses and mammalian cells at antibacterial and antimycoplasmal concentrations. Its extended stability and slow development of bacterial resistance allow long-term virus and tissue culture studies. Composed of three closely related components: gentamycin C1, C1a, and C2. Reduces sphingomyelinase activity in fibroblasts. M.W. refers to C2 free base form. Activity: ≥ 590 I.U./mg (anhydrous basis). Autoclavable. Stable over a wide pH range at 37°C for up to 15 days.
