In apoptotic cells, phosphoatidylserine (PS) is translocated from the inner to the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane, allowing for the detection of PS on the cell surface. In the presence of Ca 2+, Annexin V exhibits a high affinity for PS and binds cells with exposed PS.
